SCOPE AND CONTENT
This collection consists of digital images [CD-ROM format] of the pages from Philip M. Hamer's historical work entitled, Tennessee, A History, 1673-1932. Originally published in four (4) print volumes, Mr. Hamer's work encompassed various aspects of early Tennessee history, including the Revolutionary War, Indian relations and the frontier. Hamer's work is a well-respected literary accomplishment in Tennessee history.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Philip M. Hamer (1891-1971) was an archivist, librarian, history teacher and U.S. Historian. After receiving numerous university degrees, he served as Professor of History at U.T. Chattanooga, and later as Professor of History at U.T. Knoxville. In 1935, he served on the staff of the National Archives, and later became Executive Director of the National Historical Publications Commission from 1951 to 1961. Noted for his popularity as a history teacher, Hamer published numerous articles and books on East Tennessee. Most noted among his works was a four-volume history of Tennessee (1933), which is the subject of this special collection.
