The collection was donated by Frank Stewart Smith to the Archives and History Division, Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism in March 2006. The Rev. Frank Stewart Smith Collection is comprised of items that belonged to him as well as to his father, Walter Clyde Smith (1889-1975), to his grandfather, John Wright Smith, and to his great-grandfather, Solomon Smith, all of Sullivan County, Tennessee.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Rev. Frank Stewart Smith Collection includes genealogical information about several families from Piney Flats, Sullivan Co., TN, and also includes that of John Wright Smith (1842-1916) and his father Solomon Smith (1812-1861) and mother Eliza Arrants (b. 1821), daughter of Rev. James King of Sullivan Co., TN.   Data is also included on family of Jacob Latture Jones and Nancy Gross.  The collection contains miscellaneous photographs, 1 ledger book, 1 family history, and various family papers.


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
The Rev. Frank Stewart Smith Collection is comprised of items that belonged to him as well as to his father, Walter Clyde Smith (1889-1975), to his grandfather, John Wright Smith, and to his great-grandfather, Solomon Smith (1812-1861), all of Sullivan County, Tennessee.  At the time of this donation on 7 March 2006, Rev. Frank Stewart Smith was residing at 357 Webb Road, Piney Flats, Tennessee 37618.

Solomon Smith (1812-1861) married Eliza Arrants (1821-1889), and they resided in the Poplar Ridge community near Piney Flats in Sullivan County, Tennessee, where they are buried in the Poplar Ridge Cemetery.  They had ten known children, one of whom was John Wright Smith (1842-1916) who married Minnie Yost (d. 1937).  John Wright Smith and Minnie Yost had a son named Walter Clyde Smith (1889-1975).  Walter married Jerusha Ann Hassie Jones, and they had a son named Frank Stewart Smith (born 1920), donor of this collection.

Frank Stewart Smith was born 19 August 1920 in Williamsburg, Whitley Co., KY to Walter Clyde Smith and Jerusha Hassie Ann Jones Smith, both natives of Upper East Tennessee. He was educated in public schools of DeLand, Florida, and graduated from DeLand High School in 1938.  He attended Stetson University in DeLand from 1938-1940.  He attended Butler University in Indianapollis, Indiana from 1940-1943 and received his A.B. from there in 1943. He also attended Butler University School of Religion (now Christian Theological Seminary), where he received his Bachelor of Divinity (now Master of Divinity) in 1954.

Frank Stewart Smith married Hylda Maryon Young on 18 Jul 1943 at Northwood Christian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. They have four children: Nancy Anne (Mrs. Calvin Ross); Jacquelyn Marie (Mrs. Cyrus A. Weaver); Walter Preston; Stewart Garrett.  All of the children are professional educators.

In his occupational career, he served in student ministries with State Line Christian Church in Edgar County, Illinois and West Liberty Christian Church in Fountain County, Indiana. He served as Minister Bainbridge Christian Church in Bainbridge, Indiana from 1944-1947; Minister at Cambridge city Christian Church in Cambridge City, Indiana from 1947-1950; Minister of First Christian Church at Aurora, Illinois from 1950-1977; Minister of Grandview Christian Church at Johnson City, Tennessee from 1977-1987, retiring in 1987 with honorary title Minister Emeritus.  Mr. Smith was formally ordained to the Christian Ministry on 24 Aug 1952 by Central Christian Church in Bristol, Tennessee.  He was inducted into Emmanuel School of Religion chapter of The International Society of Theta Phi on 16 Apr 1980 (Chapter President 1990-1992).

Frank Stewart Smith served as a member of the Board of Directors for Christian Missionary Fellowship from 1953-1966; Executive Committee, Chicago District Evangelistic Association 1957-1964 (President 1960-1962); board of Directors, European Evangelistic Society 1960-2000; Board of Associates, Emmanuel School of Religion 1968-1974; North American Christian Convention committee 1971-1974; Delegate to World Convention of Churches of Christ, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1960 and Adelaide, Australia in 1970; European Evangelistic Society, travel seminars in Europe 1964 and 1972. Other travel included Jamaica in 1969 and 1974, and Bible Lands Tour in 1976 (Greece, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, plus Austria and England).

104. Story from Miss Jessie Anderson to Frank Stewart Smith, 1992. Story chronicles the Eli Anderson trip to California with the Forty-Niners.  Story was accompanied by cover letter from Miss Jessie Anderson and included obituaries of Lydia A. Carr Anderson (1845-1923) and Eli Anderson (1829-1911) of Piney Flats, Sullivan Co., TN.   The two obituaries mention Alfred Carr, Rev. James King, Richard Anderson, John Anderson, Buck Steadman, Glenn Elsea, Claude Trivette. Also included was a copy of a newspaper article by Robert Loving entitled, “His Dad Dug For Gold, Bought Sullivan Farm”, with reference to R. M. Anderson, son of Eli Anderson aforementioned.
